The Citadel Theatre, one of Canada’s largest and busiest professional, not-for-profit theatre companies and facilities, is currently seeking a Technical Director. Reporting to the Director of Production, the Technical Director is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all technical aspects of theatre productions. This includes but is not limited to lighting, sound, stage management, scenic design and construction, and props. The Technical Director will work closely with the Director of Production, Production Staff, Stage Manager, and Designers to ensure the successful execution of all productions and presentations.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Technical Direction: Oversee all technical aspects and construction of Citadel productions and presentations from initial planning to final strike for Carpentry, Props, Scenic Art, Lighting, Sound, Video, and Staging.
Technical Operations: Ensure all production venues and equipment, including lighting, sound rigging, and stage machinery, are maintained in safe operating order. Advise the Director of Production on maintenance or capital purchases requiring additional resources.
Department Management: Play a critical role in managing day-to-day Production Department operations and fostering employee development to achieve organizational objectives.
Health and Safety: Ensure all crews are working in compliance with all safety regulations and industry’s best practices. Conduct regular safety inspections and training for all technical personnel.
Interdepartmental Support: Advise and arrange technical support for events and programming within other departments, especially those taking place in one of the performance venues.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Post-Secondary Technical Theatre Production Program or related field experience.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Technical Director or related position with a producing theatre company. Unionized environment experience preferred.
Skills:
- Proficiency with Vectorworks, and ability to create and read technical drawings.
- Proficiency with common office suite software (Microsoft 365 and related products).
- Strong technical skills in lighting, sound, video, rigging, and scenic carpentry.
- Excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving, and delegation skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to safety.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Driver’s License
- Experience as a technician in one or more of these fields is an asset: lighting, sound, video, scenic carpentry, rigging, special effects.
- ETCP certification.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to travel for limited periods of time to support co-productions or tours.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as required by the production schedule.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and navigate construction sites with uneven surfaces.

Salary Rage: $70,000 – $85,000 per year.
