Albufeira Announces €1,500 Fine For Tourists Not Following The City’s New Rules, Canada Reviews

18 February 20252 Mins Read

No matter the kind of holiday you’re booking, whether it’s a week of hiking, a culture-packed mini-break or a few days stretched out under the sun, Portugal has got you covered.

However, if you’re heading to Albufeira, the sun-soaked city in Portugal’s glorious Algarve region, there are some new rules in place that you need to know about.

In 2024, eight Brits were filmed dancing completely starkers in a bar – in broad daylight, no less – on Rua da Oura, which is Albufiera’s main party strip, according to the BBC. Hardly the appropriate display for a relaxing beach break, is it?

Unsurprisingly, the deed sparked an emergency meeting with the local council, security forces and businesses. Albufeira’s mayor, José Carlos Rolo, has since pledged a crackdown on ‘excessive’ tourist behaviour. Under the new plans, anyone wearing a bikini or walking around shirtless away from the city’s beach could be fined up to €1,500 (or £1,250).

Similar rules are already in place in destinations such as Nice, Dubrovnik and Barcelona, and last year we reported on similar fines being put in place in the Balearics and Malaga, too. Probably best to cover up, eh?

Did you see that you can now travel to these three Baltic cities with a single train ticket?

Plus: Italy just added 13 new villages to its ‘most beautiful’ list – and they’re seriously underrated.
