A new ranking of the best universities has revealed the top institutions in the world for 2025.
Not only is the University of Toronto the best post-secondary school in Canada but it’s also “world-leading.”
On March 12, 2025, the QS World University Rankings by Subject was released.
It compared over 21,000 academic offerings in 55 subjects and five faculty areas at more than 1,700 universities around the world, including schools in Canada.
These are the areas of study that were analyzed for the new world university ranking:
- arts and humanities
- engineering and technology
- life sciences and medicine
- natural sciences
- social sciences and management
Then, subjects in each of those areas of study were also ranked.
According to QS, Canadian universities are best at engineering and biological sciences subjects.
There’s one university that has earned a top spot not just in Canada but in the world as well.
For 2025, the University of Toronto ranked in the top 50 for a “world-leading” 46 subjects.
That means no other university in Canada or the world has more subjects ranked that high!
Overall, U of T ranked 14th for arts and humanities, 17th for engineering and technology, 13th for life sciences and medicine, 20th for natural sciences, and 14th for social sciences and management.
Also, the University of Toronto ranked in the top 50 for these subjects:

- theology, divinity and religious studies
- archaeology
- classics and ancient history
- English language and literature
- history
- modern languages
- performing arts
- philosophy
- chemical engineering
- civil and structural engineering
- computer science and information systems
- data science and artificial intelligence
- electrical engineering
- mechanical, aeronautical and manufacturing engineering
- mining engineering
- anatomy and physiology
- biological sciences
- medicine
- nursing
- pharmacy and pharmacology
- psychology
- chemistry
- earth and marine sciences
- environmental sciences
- geography
- geology
- geophysics
- materials sciences
- mathematics
- physics and astronomy
- accounting and finance
- anthropology

This year, the University of Toronto also ranked as one of the best universities in the world because of its reputation.
