Banned candles sold in Canada recalled and you should dispose as ‘hazardous waste’

18 March 20252 Mins Read

Canadians who purchased relight candles from Walmart Canada Marketplace are being urged to get rid of them as they pose a fire hazard.

On March 12, Health Canada issued a consumer product advisory stating that relight candles were sold on Walmart Canada Marketplace, a community of third-party sellers.

“Immediately stop using the affected products and dispose of them according to municipal hazardous waste guidelines,” stated the agency.

Relight candles, or trick candles, are designed to reignite spontaneously after being extinguished or blown out. However, once disposed of, these candles are at risk of reigniting, posing a fire hazard.

Relight candles have been banned in Canada since 2016 under the Candles Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, which states that “a candle must not reignite spontaneously after it is extinguished.”

There have been no reports of injuries related to the affected products. However, consumers who may have used the product are urged to report any health or safety incidents by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.

The affected items, which were distributed by several companies in China, include:

  • Funny Relighting Candles, 10 pieces and 20 pieces Prank Trick Birthday Cake Decorations, perfect for parties and Christmas
  • Funny Trick Relighting Candle, 10 pieces and 20 pieces, Birthday Cake Decors Party Joke X-mas Gift
  • Funny Trick Relighting Candle, Birthday Cake Decors Party Joke Xmas Gift
  • LLC (10 pieces and 20 pieces) Funny Trick Relighting Candle Birthday Cake Decors Party Joke Xmas Gift
  • Nipocaio Candles — (10 pack) Trick Happy Birthday Party Decorations for Cakes
  • Prank Celebration Candle — for kids and fun-loving adults (two pieces)

The warning comes about a week after Health Canada’s advisory about the 10-piece Magic Relighting Candle candles sold on Etsy.

The products have been removed from sale online from Walmart Canada Marketplace and Etsy.

The agency has also reached out to the foreign third-party seller.
