While Mission to Zyxx’s original Star Wars / Star Trek-lampooning story came to a dramatic close with the show’s fifth season, Maximum Fun announced today that it’s producing a new eight-episode-long spin-off show. Rather than focusing on the Bargarean Jade’s journeys through the Zyxx quadrant, The Young Old Derf Chronicles will delve into the history of Old Derf (Justin Tyler) — one of the legendary Zima Warriors (think Jedis, but with sticks instead of lightsabers) tasked with protecting the Fresh side of the Space. Along with Tyler, original cast members / co-creators Jeremy Bent, Alden Ford, Allie Kokesh, Seth Lind, Winston Noel, and Moujan Zolfaghari are also set to return, and the new miniseries will feature sound design from Shane O’Connell.
In a statement about the project, Ford described it as the sort of expansion you might expect from a solid piece of sci-fi IP that already did a solid job of wrapping things up.
“Every sprawling sci-fi universe deserves an ill-advised prequel spin-off, so what better way to expand the Z.Q.S.U. (Zyxx Quadrant Sonicmatic Universe) than to reveal the origin story of Zyxx’s most unsavory geriatric mentor?” Ford said. “We’re so excited to be working on a new project we think is worthy of this amazing network and its wonderful audience.”
Currently, there’s no firm release date for The Young Old Derf Chronicles, but Maximum Fun plans for it to debut some time in late 2025. For Maximum Fun subscribers, however, bonus monthly episodes building up to to The Young Old Derf Chronicles’ launch are set to begin dropping soon.
