The pandemic and resulting cost of living crisis may have gotten us down, but Canadian patriotism has quickly rebounded to new heights since the Trump administration imposed steep tariffs on imports from the north (along with, you know, threatening to take us over).
In an act of boycott, many from Ontario and across the country are renouncing their travel plans to the U.S. in favour of exploring more of the Great White North and supporting the Canadian economy, alongside purchasing more made-in-Canada goods.
Though people have been understandably vocal about cancelling American vacations and otherwise voting with their dollar in light of everything going on, we are seeing more and more stats backing this trend up — for example, the fact that the number of border crossings from Canada to the U.S. has already plunged significantly within a matter of weeks.
Airbnb is also seeing a major shift in booking habits, with more Canadian guests suddenly searching out stays within their home country, per a new report.
The platform says that it has seen an astounding 20 per cent uptick in domestic searches for accommodation within Canada thus far in 2025 (compared to last year), with a burst of interest in a few locales in particular.
Two Ontario destinations have appeared among the top trending destinations within the country over the last few months.
As more people are searching up places like the dreamily European Quebec City and the charming beach town of Summerside, P.E.I., there has also been growth in the number of travellers looking to visit and stay in Collingwood, the home of Blue Mountain and heart of Ontario’s ski region.
With its adorable ski village and main street, spas, beaches, and tons of outdoor activities to partake in year-round, the town — only about a two-hour drive from Toronto —has long been a boon for local vacationers looking to hit the slopes or take a hike. It now understandably appears to be of particular interest for those looking to swap American trips for something closer to home.
Also on Airbnb’s top 10 trending Canadian spots is Elora, Ontario, a place known for its waterfalls and other natural wonders, as well as the historic Elora Mill Hotel and Spa. Zipline, rock climb, have lunch by the river or tube down it — there is much to do in the lovely little town, and it’s no wonder that it’s growing in popularity with those looking to travel locally.
Other places Airbnb found to be most-searched in the app amid this new shift to domestic tourism include the beautiful Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Campbell River, British Columbia and Communauté maritime des Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Québec, along with some more surprising destinations such as Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; Lethbridge and Sherwood Park, Alberta; and the prairie city of Regina.
