The most wonderful time of year is almost here, Toronto. Yep, Cherry blossom season, also known as Sakura season, will arrive before we know it, which means the city will soon be filled with the most beautiful pink and white blooms.
Toronto cherry blossom expert Steven Joniak, also known as Sakura Steve, operates the local cherry blossom guide, Sakura in High Park. Joniak is already giving a timeline of when Torontonians can expect to see cherry blossoms, so let the countdown begin.
According to Joniak’s latest post, “Thanks to our more normal winter this year, the schedule for this year’s bloom should be in line with the typical time of late April into early May.”
Of course, predictions can always change especially in a place like Toronto where the weather can be all over the place.
“If the weather turns up the heat, we can see it earlier, but if the cold snaps return, or worse, a polar vortex event, that could push out the bloom dates later into May,” Joniak continues.
Something else we can look forward to? Even more trees! Joniak mentions that the park has some newly planted cherry blossom trees, but encourages readers to respect them and let them grow.
“We must respect the newly planted trees and let them grow to their full potential so they can one day replace the beauty we lost with new blooms in the years ahead–please don’t touch, pull or otherwise damage these young trees as YOU will be the ones ruining the chance for future blossoms to bloom,” he shares.
Once the cherry blossoms bloom, we have about four to 10 days to enjoy them at their peak. Factors like excessive rain and high winds can shorten viewing times by knocking down and blowing off petals, while extreme cold or hot temperatures can also shorten the life span.
Last year, Toronto’s cherry blossoms reached peak bloom around April 24, 2024, with all areas of High Park boasting 90% open blossoms by that date.
Afternoon hot girl walks are about to get prettier, Toronto.
