The game was paused while medical personnel attended to the fan, who is said to still be “in critical condition” at Allegheny General Hospital, according to a statement from the Pittsburgh Public Safety agency.
The statement also noted that the situation is being treated as “accidental in nature.”
While baseball fans everywhere are now sending thoughts and prayers to the man and his family, many people have used the opportunity to speak out about the safety precautions put in place at the Pirates’ home field, as well as other MLB fields across the country.
“As a sports fan, I urge @MLB to improve safety at games,” one user wrote on X after Wednesday’s game. “Block 2nd and 3rd Levels from reaching for balls or jumping rails. Limit alcohol to bottom floor with a cap. Prayers for the @Pirates fan who fell and his family #Pittsburgh#piratesfan.”
“Now that this has happened you need very serious safety upgrades.@PhilliesCBP may also want to follow suit for some of those ledge areas,” someone else added.
