If you’ve got a stash of TTC tokens, tickets, or day passes kicking around in your bag, desk drawer, or coat pocket, this is your last call — because the clock is ticking.
The TTC is giving customers until June 1, 2025, to use any leftover tokens and paper fare media. After that, they won’t be accepted on any buses, streetcars, or subway stations — and you won’t be able to return them for a refund or swap them for credit either.
This is all part of the TTC’s fare modernization plan, and they’re officially phasing out the old stuff.
The TTC took this course of action as the number of customers using tickets, tokens, and day passes is extremely low and has continued declining, with less than 1% paying with tickets and tokens.
This extended grace period was put in place late last year, but let’s be honest — June felt far away at the time. Now, it’s coming up fast, and once that deadline hits, those tokens are just going to collect dust.
If you still have some TTC tickets, tokens, and day passes, here’s all you need to know.
What happens now?
If you have a TTC Day Pass, you can still use it up to and including June 1. Here’s how it works:
- It covers unlimited travel for one adult on weekdays
- On weekends and holidays, it can be used by two adults and up to four youths travelling together
- Make sure it gets validated because that’s your proof of payment for the day
If you’re still using paper fares or cash before June, remember: you’ll need to grab a paper transfer if you’re switching between a surface route and the subway. Keep it handy — you could be asked to show it at any point during your trip.
What happens after June 1?
- You can still pay with cash on vehicles and at stations
- Cash also works for buying or reloading a PRESTO card at any TTC Fare Vending Machine
- Tap your physical debit or credit card or use your phone’s wallet on any PRESTO reader — it’s super quick and requires no extra steps
- PRESTO cards can be purchased at TTC stations, online, at Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws, or even at select Toronto Public Library branches. You can also load a digital PRESTO card into your Apple Pay or Google Wallet at no cost
- For discounted fares (youth, student, or senior pricing), make sure your PRESTO card is set up properly — you’ll need to bring ID to Shoppers or the TTC’s Customer Service Centre at 1900 Yonge St. above Davisville station
June 1, 2025, is the final deadline. After that, those old TTC fares are done. If you’ve been putting off using them, now’s the time.
You do not want to be stuck with a handful of useless tokens in June.
