Lena Dunham, creator of HBO’s award-winning series Girls, will soon deliver Netflix’s new comedy series Too Much. Set to consist of 10 episodes, the new show is expected to land on Netflix globally on July 10th, 2025. Here’s an updated guide to everything we know about Lena Dunham’s Too Much.
The new is co-created by Lena Dunham, who wears multiple hats for this series! She’s directing, writing, starring, and producing the new 10-episode series. Dunham’s directing credits include the seminal and beloved series Girls, which ran for six seasons on HBO. More recent credits include Industry, Catherine Called Birdy, and more.
Dunham is reuniting with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, the producers’ team at Working Title Television (WTTV), for the new project. They worked with her on Catherine Called Birdy, starring Bella Ramsey. Camilla Bray (via her production outfit Rosetta Productions) and Mark Freeland are also listed as producers on the project.
For Netflix, Working Title recently produced Matilda the Musical and was behind the limited series Tales of the City. Elsewhere, they’re behind Prime Video’s Hanna, and for the BBC, they’ve produced The Luminaries and London Spy. Universal International Studios is the studio behind the production of Too Much.

When will Too Much release on Netflix?
As per our reporting, the series will be released in July 2025, with the official date confirmed for Thursday, July 10th. The announcement came alongside a bunch of first-look photos for the series. In a social post on Instagram, Meg Stalter teased the upcoming season with those first look pictures, saying:
“Hello to all my freak nastios. If you love slinking around the city, the television show Girls, and Fergie’s song London Bridge, you’re gonna love Lena Dunham’s new rom-com too much coming in Netflix. It’s got this British guy, this British woman, the husband from the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, this freak-ass dog, Elijah from Girls, we’re living! Actor slash model slash ultimate girls girl.
These two bomb-ass queens, it’s giving mother, and it’s giving mother. If you loved all that, you’re gonna absolutely shit your pants when you see who the main girl and the main guy is. The main guy is this guy, and the main girl is absolute comedy queen legend, Meg Stalter.
Meg Stalter getting this role is an absolute slayathon. Her range is shown through the crazy smile she’s doing in this picture, and if this show doesn’t absolutely skyrocket her career, then knock me unconscious and wake me up when it does, because I don’t want to be seeing her not on my tv and screen.”
What’s the plot of Too Much?
Before we get into the nuts and bolts of how Too Much came to be, let’s quickly take a look at the synopsis for Too Much, which has been sourced from Netflix.
“Jessica (Megan Stalter) is a New York workaholic in her mid-thirties, reeling from a broken relationship that she thought would last forever and slowly isolating everyone she knows. When every block in New York tells a story of her own bad behaviour, the only solution is to take a job in London, where she plans to live a life of solitude like a Bronte sister. But when she meets Felix (Will Sharpe) – a walking series of red flags – she finds that their unusual connection is impossible to ignore, even as it creates more problems than it solves. Now they have to ask themselves: do Americans and Brits actually speak the same language?”
At Next on Netflix UK 2025, Dunham explained that the concept for Too Much was inspired by her own experiences moving to the UK, especially after her marriage to British-Peruvian musician Luis Felber. During an interview, Dunham joked that besides Felber, “crumpets and rain” were strong motivators for her to stay in the country.
Cultural differences between Americans and Brits are a key theme throughout the series, which premiered a short video to audiences (which got a great reception) but has yet to be released to the public. The series is a blend of Dunham’s signature style—profoundly personal yet relatable storytelling—with a focus on comedy, culture, and the tension between reinvention and identity. Who are the cast members of Too Much?

The two confirmed leads of Too Much are Megan Stalter as Jessica and Will Sharpe as Felix. Stalter has been on a rocket ship of a career as of late, having played Kayla in the critically acclaimed series Hacks. Sharpe, recently seen in the movie A Real Pain, is also known for performances in the Channel 4 series Flowers, Landscapers for Max and Giri/Haji for Netflix.
