It’s been a busy week for news surrounding Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, so let’s dive into all the big stories as we gear up for a first look later this month, ahead of its official Netflix release this November.

First, we begin with Cannes, where Guillermo del Toro was in person and spoke about the movie alongside composer Alexandre Desplat. This movie is their latest collaboration after The Shape of Water and Pinocchio. The subject of conversation around Frankenstein came about what sort of movie it is with the director

“Somebody asked me the other day, does it have really scary scenes?” del Toro said, reflecting on whether the movie is really a horror film or not, saying, “For the first time, I considered that. It’s an emotional story for me. It’s as personal as anything. I’m asking a question about being a father, being a son… I’m not doing a horror movie – ever. I’m not trying to do that.”

Sheila O’Malley Writing Behind-the-Scenes Novel for Frankenstein

Last week, film critic and writer Sheila O’Malley announced on Blue Sky that she was the author behind a new, extensive novel for the upcoming movie. It’ll go deep into the behind-the-scenes of the film, with its release currently set for October 14th, 2025, with Simon & Schuster publishing.

The full synopsis for the book, which is available for pre-order now, reads as follows:

“Explore the enchanting artistry and visionary storytelling behind Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro, where stunning visuals and insightful commentary reveal the creative process and craftsmanship that bring Mary Shelley’s gothic masterpiece to life like never before.

This book is a must-have for fans of del Toro, film enthusiasts, and art lovers alike. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein will feature at TUDUM 2025

While the press was treated to a first look at the movie (including myself – it looks completely insane and a work of art) at Next on Netflix 2025 earlier this year, fans have been starved of content beyond a couple of screenshots that have surfaced through official channels.

That’ll be changing at Netflix TUDUM 2025, with the movie one of at least six set to be showcased throughout the live stream alongside high-profile returning series like Wednesday and Stranger Things. Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth will be in attendance, with more first looks expected, if not a full teaser trailer of some description.

IMAX Run for Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein?

While we know the movie is scheduled to arrive on Netflix sometime in November, reports surfaced last week about the possibility of an IMAX release, akin to the rollout that Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will receive in 2026. Per Collider, talks are ongoing, but nothing is set in stone.

For more on Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, keep it locked here on What’s on Netflix. Are you excited for this companion book and the movie itself? Let us know in the comments down below.
