UK and EU Strike Measures to Enhance Trade and Youth Mobility

The UK Government and the European Union (EU) have announced several measures to improve their bilateral relationship. These measures are expected to have a considerable impact on the hotel, travel, and restaurant industries.

The first major agreement is establishing a ‘youth experience scheme.’ Under this plan, young individuals from the UK and EU can work and travel freely in both regions. The specifics of this scheme are yet to be finalized, but it will be capped and time-limited. The officials have indicated that the scheme would likely follow similar models in place with Australia and New Zealand.

Another crucial aspect of the agreement is an updated sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement on food and drink. This new arrangement should streamline trading between the UK and EU. One of the significant changes includes the removal of some routine checks on animal and plant products.

Furthermore, British travelers will now have access to more eGates in Europe, a step expected to reduce queuing time at airports.

Industry stakeholders like UKHospitality have welcomed these developments. The organization has called for a youth experience scheme that offers ‘maximum flexibility,’ as it believes such initiatives are crucial for cultural exchange and economic benefit.

These measures are announced at a time when the hospitality industry is eagerly looking for ways to recover post-pandemic. The youth mobility scheme is expected to provide a much-needed workforce boost, while eased trade restrictions could lead to better access to quality, affordable food and drink. The increased use of eGates could also enhance the travel experience, encouraging more UK citizens to travel to Europe, potentially boosting tourism.

In the coming months, the focus will be on implementing these measures and their actual impact on the hotel, travel, and restaurant industry in the UK and EU.
