Love, Death and Robots returned for its fourth volume, but will there be a fifth season? While we’d like to be cautiously optimistic, first week numbers don’t paint a particularly bright picture with viewership dropping by about half from volume 3, and the season having some of the worst-rated episodes in the series’ history.
I’d like to give you a heads-up about this article. It isn’t particularly positive, and that’s pretty painful to report, given that the show was and still remains one of my absolute favorite shows the streamer has ever produced.
Launching with 10 episodes, many creators from past seasons returned with new stories with familiar art styles. This season featured a range of different topics, such as cats taking over the world, a WW2 episode with a Nazi-spawned demon, a visiting alien who takes its gospel from a miracle dolphin, and another cat going up against the devil himself.
Reviews for the new season have been pretty mixed. The main subreddit for the show on Reddit seems to be the most critical of the show’s latest season. While there are varying reasons for their criticisms, there are probably three central themes: lack of focus and poor execution, Mr Beast’s involvement, and the music video for the opener by David Fincher.
One of the top posts on the Reddit in the last week suggested that Don’t Stop doesn’t really belong in the blueprint of a Love, Death and Robots episode, writing, “The executive producer of LDR used to be a music video director, he reached out to RHCP and got ghosted, so he made… a stylized omage to one of their concerts… yeah thats, no deeper meaning other than him living his wet dream. Yeah I’m not a fan.”
Personally, I somewhat agree with the takes seen online—to an extent, anyway. This is undoubtedly one of the weaker seasons, with some rare surface-level episodes and talent wasted, but it also has some fantastic episodes. Zeke Finds His Religion and 400 Boys are particular standouts, but I also appreciated some of the others, too, albeit most didn’t seem to land quite as hard as some episodes in prior seasons.
The IMDb ratings perhaps provide the most indicative and illustrative visuals for the new season. Thanks to RatingGraph and SeriesGraph, you can see that volume 4 features some of the series ‘ worst-rated episodes, with the Red Hot Chili Peppers episode Don’t Stop being the series’ worst at 4.2/10.

How is the viewership for Love, Death and Robots Volume 4?
Here’s where the show is really coming unstuck. We have data for both the launch of Volume 3 and Volume 4, and things don’t look particularly positive. Volume 3 launched with 14.42 million hours viewed in its first week. Volume 4 just got announced to launch with 5.9M hours watched, a decrease of close to 60%, doing exact comparisons. When you turn that into views to account each season’s runtime, that’s roughly a 63% drop in views, albeit you need to take into account that volume 3 launched a little later in the week, so ultimately the drop is closer to 50%.
Another comparison is the country total, with Volume 4 featuring in 24 countries’ top 10s and Volume 3 in 29.
What’s Been Said About Volume 5 of Love, Death and Robots?
Not much has been directly said about a fifth volume, and it’s clear that the series is now awaiting an official thumbs-up from the streamer, but those connected to the show have expressed wanting to do more in various interviews.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Tim Miller was enthusiastic about volume 5 and beyond telling the outlet, “I could do this show until I fucking die… and you’ll keep seeing something new until we die.”
Miller also mentioned in numerous interviews some of the stories he hopes to see get adapted. As a self-described “cyberpunk nerd,” Tim revealed that he’s still trying to get the rights to adapt William Gibson’s original short story of Johnny Mnemonic, which he believes is “so much better than the movie.” He’s also interested in adapting “Dogfight,” a lesser-known Gibson short co-written with Bruce Sterling. Both could be strong contenders for future episodes.
Tim mentioned an interest in hybrid stop-motion and CG, referring to an older short film that used real human eyes composited into stop-motion puppets. He described the look as “uncanny and cool,” and something LDR could definitely pull off. Another director on the show said they’d love to see more stop-motion storytelling in the show.
According to those in attendance at one of the premieres in Los Angeles, which involved a panel that was led by Guillermo del Toro (who has multiple projects in the works for Netflix, including Frankenstein, The Boy in the Iron Box, and The Buried Giant), he expressed an interest. He heavily suggested he’d be signed on for an episode in any fifth volume. Miller also spoke in an interview with The Hollywood Handle about wanting to work with Zack Snyder, Fede Álvarez, and Chad Stahelski on an episode, too. “It’s really nice to have a sandbox that other people want to play in… especially ones that haven’t done animation before,” the EP of the show says.
In that interview, Miller also says they’ve pitched an entire series on the Three Robots who have been a constant throughout LD+R so far, “[it] hasn’t gotten any traction yet, but maybe it will.”
Of course, we’d recommend watching Tim Miller’s other major show, Secret Level, which is released exclusively on Prime Video. It shares much of the same DNA as LD+R and was recently renewed for a full second season.
