There’s a scenic swimming hole in Alberta with soft sand and mountain views

22 May 20253 Mins Read

The Rocky Mountains are a treasure trove of scenic places to relax, recharge, and breathe deeply. After all, there’s no air like mountain air, and in Alberta, all of this is just a short drive away.

Surrounded by trees and sun-bathed peaks, Quarry Lake in Canmore is just one of the many destinations where you can spend a day outside — but unlike others, it also has sand.

A tranquil escape

With a stunning backdrop, remarkable trails, and postcard-perfect views, this popular spot has a little something for everyone.

While it was once an open-pit coal mine, you’d never be able to tell, thanks to its deep blue water and abundant wildlife.

Luckily, it’s changed immensely since the ‘70s, and now exists as a place for families, explorers, and friends to have a picnic or go swimming, but be warned.

You might want to wait until peak season to dip your toes or go paddleboarding.

Described as one of “Canmore’s favourite outdoor recreational areas”, Quarry Lake is over 100 metres deep and is fed by an underground mountain spring.

Here, if you’re brave enough, you can make a splash between July and August, but don’t fret if it’s still chilly.

Even on the cooler days, there’s plenty to do because the lake is surrounded by an open park area, where you can play lawn games, kick your feet up, or enjoy a meal.

As we mentioned, there are also several pathways where you can wander, run, hike, or bike, including the Red Commuter Trail.

Heck, there’s even a small beach!

Want to visit?

Get ready, get set.

Quarry Lake is accessible by bicycle, on foot via the Canmore trail system, or by vehicle.

If you’re driving, head toward the Nordic Centre. The lake will be on your left side, about halfway up the hill from the town.

Please note that there are no cookstoves or firepits on site, however, there are toilets, but you’ll want to come extra prepared.

Pack a cooler, a towel, and your camera! Because you’re in for a fun-filled day in the beautiful Alberta Rockies.

Where: Quarry Lake, Canmore, Alta.
