An iconic TV series was filmed at this historic Metro Vancouver park with a lake

23 May 20253 Mins Read

Como Lake is a picturesque spot for a picnic or stroll year-round, but in the spring, the City park comes alive with vibrant rhododendrons, which are currently at peak bloom. The lake is located at the centre of the park, surrounded by a one-kilometre trail that winds its way around its boggy surroundings.

Historic lake and loop trail

According to the City of Coquitlam, the park dates back to the early 1900s, when French Canadians arrived at Fraser Mills, bringing their love of hockey and skating with them. As a result, many early Coquitlam residents can recall skating across Como Lake during the winter months, leading to a continued community tradition.

During the warmer months, the lake offers a place to cool off with a dip, as it has for over 100 years. By the 1960s, Como Lake had become a popular park in the growing community of Coquitlam, with a new playground, water taps, picnic tables, and trout available for fishing. During the 1967 centennial year, fishing derbies were introduced.

Today, the Como Lakeside Loop trail offers park-goers a flat, natural surface to wander, suitable for both walkers and joggers, according to the City.

Nearly 200 Canada geese

Another feature of the park is its massive resident Canada goose community. The City explains that the park’s geese have multiplied in recent summers due to their seasonal migration during the moulting season in June and July, temporarily rendering them flightless. Nearly 200 Canada geese can be counted at the park at this time of year, which the City is addressing by relocating them in June to ensure they have the ample shoreline they need to thrive.

So, needless to say, make sure you aren’t feeding the geese during your visit!

Filming location of Supernatural

Finally, the City adds another accolade to the charming community park: a filming location of Supernatural, a drama series starring Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki that ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020.

Apparently, Coquitlam as a whole was a hotspot for the series’ filming locations, extending to Como Lake more than once.

How to get there: Drive one hour from Vancouver to Como Lake Park (700 Gatensbury St., Coquitlam) via E. 1st Avenue
