‘The Mothers of Penguins’ Renewed for Season 2 at Netflix

The Mothers of Penguins (Matki pingwinów in Poland) has been confirmed to be returning for a second season at Netflix. The Polish family drama first debuted on the streamer in November 2024, and although it took some time to get renewed, confirmation came through official social media on May 26th.

Starring an ensemble cast including Masza Wągrocka, Barbara Wypych, Magdalena Różczka, Tomasz Tyndyk, and Jan Luba, the series told the story of an MMA fighter who faces her toughest challenge yet. However, it’s not inside the ring: it’s battling her seven-year-old, who is attending a new school.

In a press release provided to Polish outlets, Klara Kochańska-Bajon, the creator, scriptwriter, and director of the series, said (translated into English):

“The wide and enthusiastic reception of Penguin Moms exceeded our wildest expectations. It’s a huge motivation to work on the next chapter of this story, where the parents will face new challenges not only related to raising and watching their children grow up, but also to their own maturation and personal development. The whole team can’t wait to meet on set again and for this crazy adventure—fueled by love, the desire to build awareness, and the strengthening of the parenting community—to begin anew.”

Kuba Razowski, Manager of Original Series at Netflix Poland, said (again, translated into English):

“The success of Mothers of Penguins and how many viewers saw themselves in this series shows that we really need such stories. We are glad that we can continue working with the creators of the series and officially share the information about the start of work on the continuation that viewers are waiting for.”

The renewal coincided with Mother’s Day (in Poland), with the official account saying:

How well did The Mothers of Penguins perform on Netflix?

As we’ve covered with all local renewals in the past, including many from Poland, the most critical metric appears to be reaching the top 10 daily rankings in its home country for at least 30 days, which then, more often than not, warrants a renewal. That was once again the case here with The Mother of Penguins featuring in the daily top 10s in Poland for 55 days following its release.

The series did not feature in the weekly top 10 chart, although we know, courtesy of the fourth Netflix Engagement Report, that it was the 320th most-watched title in the period from July to December 2024, garnering 29.90 million hours watched, equivalent to 5.9 million views.

The show wasn’t quite a breakout in international regions, again following in the footsteps of most other Polish titles, but did manage to enter the daily top 10s in 24 other countries (via FlixPatrol), including:

  • Argentina – 17 days
  • Czech Republic – 13 days
  • Hungary – 9 days
  • Slovakia – 9 days
  • Uruguay – 9 days
  • Reunion – 8 days
  • Iceland – 7 days
  • Ukraine – 7 days
  • Germany – 6 days
  • Chile – 5 days
  • Luxembourg – 5 days
  • Venezuela – 5 days
  • Austria – 4 days
  • Belgium – 4 days
  • Spain – 4 days
  • Switzerland – 4 days
  • France – 3 days
  • Guadeloupe – 3 days
  • New Caledonia – 3 days
  • Colombia – 2 days
  • Martinique – 2 days
  • Costa Rica – 1 day
  • Mexico – 1 day
  • Paraguay – 1 day

Netflix’s upcoming Polish slate includes 1670, renewed for a second and third season, with the former set to arrive in the Fall of 2025. The comedy series Aniela is set to arrive on June 11th, and one that we’ve heard has high buzz within Netflix is Heweliusz, an ensemble drama about the Polish ferry MS Jan Heweliusz that capsized off the coast of Rügen in the Baltic Sea, scheduled for release in 2025.
