There are over 60 free online courses to take through Toronto Public Library

27 May 20252 Mins Read

If you’re only using the Toronto Public Library to rent books, then you’re missing out on some pretty awesome perks. As Arthur would say, “having fun isn’t hard when you’ve got a library card.” Did you know that through TPL, you can sign up for free classes on a range of topics, including law and business?

It’s easy peasy to sign up, so what are you waiting for?

According to the Toronto Public Library, these free Gale Courses are online but still instructor-led. “As a library card holder in good standing, you are entitled to these courses at no cost. Courses run for six weeks and new sessions begin every month,” states the organization.

Currently, there are 68 courses available that fall under 12 categories. Those categories include:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Business
  • College Readiness
  • Computer Applications
  • Design and Composition
  • Healthcare and Medical
  • Language and Arts
  • Law and Legal
  • Personal Development
  • Teaching and Education
  • Technology
  • Writing and Publishing

Once you’ve narrowed down your category and course, it’s time to sign up! You must have a Toronto library card and create a free Gale Courses account or sign in to an existing ed2go account.

From there, enter your email address in the New Student area and click “Create Account.” You will use your Gale Courses account email and password to log in to the My Classroom area, which will tell you all about your sessions and when lessons begin. Finally, put in your library barcode in the box and go to “Use Library Card” to complete enrollment.

Done. In a world where education costs (and the cost of basically everything else, for that matter) seem to never stop growing, this is a pretty great way to learn something new without breaking the bank.
