Ontario has a scenic train ride that travels along the Muskoka River

5 June 20252 Mins Read

There’s a scenic train experience in Ontario that you have to try this spring. Bear witness to the beauty that is the Muskoka River on the Muskoka Heritage Place Portage Flyer Train.

You’ll feel as if you’re living in the 1900s as you take a ride on the Portage Flyer Train.

All aboard!

According to the Muskoka Heritage Place, the Portage Flyer was once the world’s shortest narrow-gauge commercial railway.

It’s now used for leisurely rides past the Muskoka River to the edge of Fairy Lake. The train engine is powered by steam or diesel-electric, depending on the season and availability.

“Your journey will bring you to the Purser’s Cabin at the end of the track, where inside we celebrate the rich history of Bigwin Inn, a lavish resort on Bigwin Island, Lake of Bays, where the upper class from all over the world sought fun and relaxation,” shares the organizers.

The overall experience is about 25 minutes long. Those interested in this journey must arrive 15 minutes before departure times to ensure they get a spot on the train.

And to get tickets, you can only get them on the same day. Make sure to head to the station as it opens one hour prior to departure for ticket sales.

This train ride is only available until June 28, 2025, so hop on before it’s too late.

All aboard the scenic Muskoka train. We’ll see you there!
