Auditions (Calgary): Staged Reading – Incendiary Festival, Theater News

Incendiary Playwrights Initiative – Audition Call

Incendiary Festival is looking for actors for 2 workshop readings in the Playwrights Initiative. We have 2 workshop readings taking place in June/early July. We’d need actors for both performances. You do not have to audition for both to be considered at all.

The Initiative: The goal of this project is to give playwrights, actors, directors, and dramaturgs a chance to grow their skills, try something new, and make connections without the pressure or time commitment of a full production. We also want to connect with creatives who share our values and connect with our process for potential work on our full-scale projects in the future.

Throughout the season, we will be producing eleven readings of new works by Albertan playwrights. Each project is unique and focuses on experimenting with different storytelling styles. Depending on the show, preparations for the reading will include anywhere from one to four rehearsal dates, culminating in a performance to remember. Rehearsals and Performance will be selected based on the chosen cast’s availability.

Whether you’ve always wanted to try your hand at acting but never have, or are looking for the perfect bite-sized project to fill out your packed schedule, this is an opportunity to try something new and connect with other creatives.

Incendiary Festival is incredibly passionate about working with performers of all ages, body types, ethnicities, and with folks with disabilities. If you are interested in the projects, we are interested in seeing you. Period.

Projects:
She by Alexandra Dodd
This is the story of AMARA and her sister JANESSA. The play itself is the aftermath of JANESSA’s death as AMARA’s mind struggles to grapple with this loss. In each compartment of her mind dwell FRAGMENTS, bits of memory and emotion that are stuck in memories that reflect different moments in time of JANESSA and AMARA’s relationship. AMARA and JANESSA are also present.

CHARACTER LIST:
Amara (She/Her, Any Ethnicity, 20s-30s) – Amara is reeling from the sudden loss of her older sister. She can’t escape the relentless cycle of her memories.
Janessa (She/Her, Any Ethnicity, 20s-30s) – Janessa has died. All that remains of her are Amara’s memories.
Fragments (Any gender identity, but must be comfortable with the fact they are embodying the experience of a grieving woman. Any Ethnicity. 20s’-30’s) – Bits and pieces of memory.

Clowncar Named Freedom by Nicole Orana Rvachew
BonBon the Clown and other performers are abruptly woken up in the middle of the night by their train car getting stopped. There is shouting outside in an unknown language. Their best guess is they’ve hit a blockade on their way up North. The soldiers of the blockade look through their car. They scare BonBon, who hides near the bear’s cage. They are about to drag Ryker, their sword swallower, off the train. BonBon opens the bear cage, and all chaos is let loose.

CHARACTER LIST: WE ARE ESPECIALLY LOOKING FOR PEOPLE OF COLOUR
BonBon/Safa – A young clown. Naive and quick to trust. Can be played by any gender, preferably femme.
Jaqueline – An acrobat. Her acrobatic act is paired with Antonio, and they appear asa couple on stage, but in reality they do not get along at all, but she tries to be professional about it. Femme identifying actor.
Antonio – A team act with Jaqueline, he is full of himself, and thinks he knows best. He sees himself as the star of their act. Masc identifying actor. Ryker/Aziza Older than the rest, more ragged. Can be played by any gender, preferably femme.
Mariam – The circus medic. Like a mother to Bonbon. She is kind, always looking to help others. What she lacks is a strong resolve, instead surrounding herself with interesting characters with strong opinions.
Geralt – The “leader” of the travelling group of refugees. He is soft spoken, and struck by the loss of his wife, and most of his family. He is highly cautious, always thinking of whats best for the whole.
Nadia – Geralt’s daughter. Once on her way to becoming an engineer, she is smart, resourceful, and passionate.
Lobo – The ringleader. Can be played by any gender.
General – A high standing member of the EDF (Esranian Defence Force). He has a way with words, having the ability to convince people of almost anything.
Soldier x3 – Soldiers. Cold. Brutal.
Men x3 – Miscellaneous men throughout the story.
Darla – A bear.

Compensation: Incendiary Festival operates under a profit-share model. This means we can not guarantee compensation, as the profit is never guaranteed. However, we do everything we can to ensure our projects fit around your other commitments and are rewarding in other ways.
