Controversial Trans Artist Is ‘Wearing Black’ to the Pride Parade in New Video and Single

12 June 20252 Mins Read

Laura Jane Grace has a reputation for raising a ruckus and with her new single and video she doesn’t disappoint.

The singer-guitarist, who first gained notice in the punk band Against Me!, came out as a transgender woman in 2012 and announced plans to transition. She titled Against Me!’s final two albums Transgender Dysphoria Blues (2014) and Shape Shift With Me (2016).

Since then, she’s been recording as Laura Jane Grace and calls her latest band Laura Jane Grace in the Trauma Tropes. The group’s new single and video, “Wearing Black,” addresses the dilemma of being a punk or goth at a Pride Parade that’s filled with rainbows, sparkles and glitter. “My pride’s a riot, it’s not a ,” Grace sings in the rollicking punk anthem, just in time for Pride Month.

The song also includes a hilarious reference to another pop culture figure. “Jojo Siwa is playing a 2,” Grace sings in the song. “She’s got that karma and some Tito’s too.”

You can see the video for “Wearing Black,” directed by Emily Esperanza, on YouTube.

Grace’s band includes her wife, TikTok star and comedian Paris Campbell Grace on vocals along with Jacopo “Jack” Fokas on bass and Orestis Lagadinos on drums. The band’s new album, Adventure Club, is due on July 18.

The album is inspired by Grace’s time spent in Greece in the summer of 2024 when she joined a residency program in Athens. She ended up recording the album in Greece, when not hanging out at beaches and such tourist attractions as the Parthenon and Epidaurus and running the track at the Panathenaic Stadium, according to a press release.

Grace is touring this summer, beginning Friday, June 13 in Garwood, N.J. with dates running through Aug. 30 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Joining Grace in select markets are Murder By Death, Rodeo Boys, Trapper Schoepp and Team Nonexistent.
