The Gathering’ Series for Netflix

Magic: The Gathering has been in development at Netflix for some time, although it has undergone multiple iterations. The first iteration, involving the Russo Brothers, was first announced in 2019 and was initially scheduled to launch on Netflix in 2022. Although we don’t know exactly what happened to that iteration, in September 2024, Netflix announced a new creative team would lead the new series.

At the Annecy Film Festival 2025, Netflix showcased early concept art for the new series, in addition to announcing which animation studio would be collaborating with Netflix’s internal teams to bring the famous card game to life on Netflix.

As previously announced, Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, and MacGyver) is on board to serve as showrunner behind the new show, with Patrick Osborne set to direct the series, which focuses on the characters Nahiri and Ajani.

At Annecy Film Festival, Netflix outlined its future series lineup by putting series into four buckets: Kids + Pre-school, Adult Comedy, Adult Spectacle, and Family Spectacle. In the case of Magic: The Gathering, it falls in the “Adult Spectacle” camp and was previewed alongside Splinter Cell: Deathwatch and Blue Eye Samurai season 2.

Presenting those shows was Dylan Thomas, Director of Adult Animation at Netflix. Calling Magic: The Gathering one of their most ambitious shows to date and promising more will be showed off in 2026, Thomas said, “We are thrilled to bring Magic: The Gathering to the screen for the first time,” he said, adding, “Based on one of the most popular trading card games of all time, this is the one that started and defined the genre three decades ago, and is still going strong. Hasbro and we have put together a profoundly talented team. We have Terry Matalas in the writing, Oscar-winning Patrick Osborne directing our series, and Simon Rogers serving as our incredible art director.”

Continuing, Thomas said, “This series is an epic fantasy saga that centers around three powerful mages, known as planeswalkers, who are able to travel across infinite worlds, each one vividly distinct from one another.”

“Patrick’s team is hard at work at our Netflix-bound studios in Los Angeles, and we’re very, very excited to announce that we’re going to be partnering with the incredible CG studio, Digic, based in Budapest.”

Some concept art was also shown for the series, although it has yet to be released to the public.

Who are DIGIC Pictures? In operation for 22 years, the production company has worked on numerous projects, primarily in the video game industry. They provide services for game cinematics such as those found on Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Rainbow Six: Siege, and Star Wars: Outlaws. They also worked on Prime Video’s Secret Level series, released last year.

In a social post following the announcement, DIGIC Pictures said:

“Netflix officially announced that DIGIC has been chosen as the animation studio for the highly anticipated animated series based on the iconic game Magic: The Gathering…

At DIGIC, we are incredibly proud and honored to be entrusted with bringing this legendary universe to life. We’re thrilled to be part of this journey and can’t wait to create something truly unforgettable for longtime fans and new audiences alike.”

Magic: The Gathering is produced in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast.
