Is Kevin Costner ready to retire? Not quite. The Yellowstone star shared his future plans and they don’t include a break from acting.
“I don’t even think about retiring, because I’ll just move to the next thing that captures my imagination,” Costner, 70, told People magazine in an interview that was published on June 14. “Imagination is what determines what I do, not a boss. I think we’re all different and we have different things happening for us,” he continued, adding, “I’ve felt really lucky in my life. I’d like to think that I worked for all of it, but not everybody can live by the same blueprint.”
Costner has had an incredible career thus far, with dozens of movies and television show credits to his name. Additionally, he’s been recognized for his work with various awards.
Back in 2024, Costner made headlines when his decision to leave Yellowstone was announced. He shared the news in a candid video posted to his Instagram account. While there have been plenty of rumors surrounding Costner’s exit from the neo-Western, it seems the demanding schedule was the ultimate reason that the actor left.
In an interview with People magazine back in June 2024, Costner further explained his decision. He said that the show was originally pitched as one season and, while he said he loved working on Yellowstone, the schedule was just too demanding.

“There was a moment where that show for me stopped for 14 months. That’s the fact. I could have done a lot of things in that time, but I wasn’t aware that that [hold-up] was going to happen,” he said.
Costner played John Dutton for five seasons, from 2018 to 2022. These days, there’s no shortage of work for Costner. According to his IMDb page, he’s slated to star in a handful of upcoming projects.
