In Wild Rose Country, there is no shortage of charming towns and stunning viewpoints, but if you’re looking for a scenic trail with excellent payoff, Grassi Lakes is an Alberta must-visit.
Located in Canmore, this popular hike leads to a shallow, aquamarine lake — one of the clearest we’ve ever seen.
Through the towering trees and up the path, this tranquil area looks like it was taken straight from a postcard and is fairly easy to get to.
How to get to Grassi Lakes
Want to check it out? Start at the Grassi Lakes trailhead.
Just 100 metres from where you started your journey, you’ll reach a fork in the path, with signs pointing you to both the easier trail and the more difficult option.
If you’re with the kids, your smaller dog, or are just hoping for something a little less taxing, the Upper trail is the less strenuous of the two.
The Interpretive trail, on the other hand, is the more difficult one, but definitely brings the drama.
On this route, after a gentle incline, you will reach a steeper section with panoramic views and even a waterfall.
You’ll also see signs that will take you through the history of Grassi, including those that tell the story of Lawrence Grassi, the man who built the original trail.
Either way, your trip will be a dreamy one with picture-perfect moments, plenty of fresh air, and maybe, if you’re lucky, a wildlife sighting!
As always, please wear appropriate footwear, bring snacks, a water bottle, sunscreen and good company.
With 1.9 kilometres to explore (one way), you’ll want someone to share the experience with.
After all, Grassi Lakes is a Canmore classic, and you never know what you might see along the way.
