Filming is underway on Netflix’s adaptation of Miles Franklin’s beloved novel, My Brilliant Career, which will star Philippa Northeast in the lead role of Sybylla Melvin. The cast has been unveiled, with filming taking place in South Australia. Here’s everything we know so far about My Brilliant Career on Netflix.

My Brilliant Career is an upcoming Australian Netflix Original series and adaptation of Miles Franklin’s novel of the same name. The series is written and helmed by Liz Doran, who shared a statement on her excitement about working on the series.

“It’s been a privilege to work with so many incredible creatives on this reimagining of Miles Franklin’s rollicking tale of a young woman’s quest to determine her own life.” – Liz Doran

Alyssa McClelland will direct episodes 1 -3 and also serve as an executive producer, while Anne Renton is responsible for directing episodes 4-6. Jungle Entertainment is the production studio behind the series, with Chloe Rickard serving as an executive producer for the studio. She also shared a statement:

“It’s thrilling to bring this Australian classic to a whole new audience. Partnering with Netflix and fellow executive producers Liz Doran and Alyssa McClelland, with Philippa Northeast as our rebellious and witty Sybylla, has been the stuff that dreams are made of.” – Chloe Rickard

Territory’s Paul Ranford has also been confirmed as a producer, Courtney Wise (Dance Academy) is a co-executive producer, while Shari Sebbens (Top End Bulb) is an associate producer.

What is the plot of My Brilliant Career?

In the late 19th Century, Australia, a strong and ambitious young woman named Sybylla Melvyn is coming of age amidst her family’s financial struggles. After multiple disagreements with her mother, Sybylla is offered the chance to move to the Caddagat estate, where Mrs. Bossier takes her under her wing to “refine” Sybylla and prepare her for marriage. Eager to move, it’s not long before Sybylla falls in love with life at Caddagat, where she meets Harold Beecham, the owner of the neighboring estate, and thus the courtship begins. Much to Sybylla’s dismay, her family’s financial troubles force her to travel to Barney’s Gap, where she is to be the governess of the M’Swat household.

Who are the cast members of My Brilliant Career?

Philippa Northeast will play the lead role of Sybylla. The actress starred in Netflix’s Territory as Susia Lawson. She’s also known for recently starring in Good Cop/Bad Cop, and The Newsreader.
