Toronto needs volunteers for its 2026 World Cup games and you can apply with zero experience, Life in canada

19 June 20253 Mins Read

This time next year, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be in full swing, and Toronto will be one of the global stages welcoming fans from around the world. To help bring the tournament to life, FIFA is now recruiting volunteers to help host the planet’s biggest sporting event.

Toronto’s BMO Field — which will be renamed Toronto Stadium for the duration of the tournament — is set to make history as the first Canadian stadium to host a FIFA World Cup match. It will host six games, including Canada’s highly anticipated opening match, on Friday, June 12, 2026.

The city has previously hosted FIFA youth tournaments, including the U-17, U-20, and U-20 Women’s World Cups. However, this will mark its debut in the senior men’s tournament — and the largest World Cup ever held.

This expanded edition of the tournament will feature 48 teams competing in 104 matches across 16 host cities in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.

Apart from Canada’s opener, the 6ix will host other four group stage matches on Wednesday, June 17, Saturday, June 20, Tuesday, June 23, and Friday, June 26, until its last game — a round-of-32 knockout tie on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

As preparations ramp up, FIFA has launched its volunteer program in Toronto, calling on people to get involved.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of FIFA events,” the official website reads.

“FIFA World Cup 26 volunteers will be part of a once-in-a-generation team — helping bring to life a tournament uniting three countries, 16 host cities and billions of hearts around the world.”

Applications are now open and you can express your interest anytime between now and August.

In August, applicants will complete an online assessment to showcase their skills, passion, and availability. Interviews or recruitment events will follow in the Fall, providing a chance to connect with other candidates and meet the organizing team.

Volunteer role offers will begin rolling out between January and February 2026. Those selected will receive training, an official 2026 FIFA World Cup uniform, and accreditation for the tournament.

Volunteers will receive exclusive recognition items to commemorate their contribution. Shifts include meals and refreshments, and all participants will be awarded a certificate of appreciation. Beyond the perks, volunteers can expect hands-on learning opportunities, meaningful connections, and the chance to be part of a truly unforgettable global event.

Meanwhile, the City of Toronto has revealed that the FIFA Fan Festival will take over Fort York National Historic Site and The Bentway during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, transforming the space into a vibrant hub of culture and celebration. This free, all-ages event will feature live match broadcasts on massive screens, music, art, food, and high-energy vibes.
