A popular western series was spotted filming at a Calgary Museum

24 June 20254 Mins Read

Exciting news for cinephiles! A popular Calgary location will be closed this week for filming, and rumours are flying as to what the production could be.

Calgary’s living museum, Heritage Park, has been a popular filming location for years. The location’s cinematic history goes as far back as 1966, with more than 150 productions filmed there over the decades.

The streets of Heritage Park’s historical village have starred in everything from period dramas to international hits. HBO’s The Last of Us (2023) used the Wainwright Hotel along with a few other buildings as one of its major sets in 2021.

Clearly the silver screen can’t get enough, because once again, Heritage Park Village will be hosting another film crew this week.

This is the announcement Heritage Park posted on their website and social media channels:

“On Thursday, June 26 and Friday, June 27, the Historical Village will be closed while Heritage Park takes centre stage in a major film production.”

Naturally, speculation abounds as to what might be filming.

According to ACTRA Alberta, there are a few things it could be. Season 19 of Heartland is filming in Calgary and surrounding areas until Aug. 28, 2025. There is also something mysteriously dubbed “Cowboy (Unit Shoot)” set to film between June 21 and July 3.

Of course, people are already betting that the filming at Heritage Village is likely for the upcoming season of Billy the Kid, which is shooting in and around Calgary until July 11.

When fans started to speculate, Heritage Park replied with a sunglasses emoji on a Facebook post.

Well, you heard it here first, because Heritage Park confirmed with Daily Hive that the filming happening on-site this week is indeed for Billy The Kid!

Here is what they were able to tell us about the production so far:

The Lincoln County War may be officially over, but both Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett (Alex Roe) have important issues to resolve — there is a reckoning to come. Billy is still at large, and Garrett is out to capture him, dead or alive. And with a bounty on his head, Billy has the opportunity to quit New Mexico altogether and pursue a future with Dulcinea (Nuria Vega), the love of his life. But he has unfinished business with Garrett, who has betrayed him, and decides to stay. Meanwhile, Jesse Evans (Daniel Webber), Billy’s longtime friend, rival, and enemy, also remains in Lincoln, searching for a newfound purpose and perhaps atonement for his sins. As the final chapter in the saga comes to a close, Billy will fight like hell to try to finally find the justice that has long eluded him, even if it means he’ll die trying.

If you were planning to visit Heritage Park this week, know that the Village will be entirely closed to the public on Thursday, June 26 and Friday, June 27. So, no chance to sneak on set.

If you wanted to visit for non-film-related reasons, there’s still plenty to do. Heritage Plaza, including the Haskayne Mercantile Block, the Selkirk restaurant, the Railway Café and the Gasoline Alley Museum, will remain open.

Heritage Park will reopen in full on Saturday, June 28, and will be unveiling a brand-new paleontology exhibit called the Badlands Dinosaur Dig.
