Frontmezzjunkies reports: New York City Center announces Casting for Bat Boy

June 2025 (NEW YORK, NY) – NEW YORK CITY CENTER announced that Taylor Trensch, who made his Broadway debut as Boq in Wicked in 2012, will play the title character, Bat Boy in the Annual Gala Presentation Bat Boy: The Musical. Directed by two-time Tony winner Alex Timbers (Broadway’s Just In Time) alongside Music Director Andrew Resnick (Broadway’s Boop) and choreography by Connor Gallagher (Broadway’s Beetlejuice), this heartfelt, irreverent, darkly comic musical opens October 29 (through November 9) with a benefit performance honoring Broadway producer Bee Carrozzini of ATG Entertainment. The production also kicks off the first musical theater season planned by newly appointed VP & Artistic Director, Musical Theater, Jenny Gersten.

After being discovered in a cave and adopted by a local West Virginia family, Bat Boy, also known as Edgar, wants nothing more than to be accepted by the community and works hard to appeal to their “Christian Charity.” But will his insatiable bloodlust be his undoing? Or will the bloodlust of a town searching for an easy scapegoat beat him to the punch?

The musical opened off-Broadway at the Union Square Theatre on March 21, 2001, and closed on December 2, 2001. Directed by Scott Schwartz, the production, with choreography by Christopher Gattelli, featured Deven May as Bat Boy, and won the awards for best Off-Broadway musical, including the Lucille Lortel Award, two Richard Rodgers Awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Outer Critics Circle Award.

Inspired by a popular tabloid article from the 1990s, this “fervid, wicked, and arch” (The New York Times) musical gained cult classic status when it premiered Off-Broadway in 2001. Featuring a pulsing pop-rock score by Tony nominee Laurence O’Keefe (Heathers: The Musical) with original orchestrations by Tony winner Alex Lacamoire (Broadway’s Dear Evan Hansen), and book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, this Gala Presentation shines fresh light on a beloved score with newly expanded orchestrations. Funds raised from Bat Boy: The Musical help keep City Center’s unforgettable performances affordable and accessible for everyone.

Taylor Trensch received a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Skeets Miller in Lincoln Center Theater’s revival of Floyd Collins. He recently starred in Safety Not Guaranteed at BAM (Outer Critics Circle nomination) and in The Seven Year Disappear opposite Cynthia Nixon. Additional Broadway credits include Camelot, To Kill a Mockingbird, Dear Evan Hansen, Hello, Dolly!, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Matilda, Wicked. Film and Television credits include “Your Monster“, “Things Like This“, “Evil“, and “Law & Order: SVU“.
