A district near Toronto has an old mill, quiet beaches and hidden hamlets

8 July 20253 Mins Read

There’s nothing like exploring one of Ontario’s lovable small towns. East of Toronto, you’ll find Clarington, part of the Durham Region. This area has no shortage of historical sights, yummy food, waterfront beaches, and outdoor adventure.

According to Destination Ontario, “Filled with scenic farmlands, endearing townships, historical sites and outdoor adventures, Clarington begs to be explored.”

One of the area’s main attractions is Tyrone Mills, a historic, traditional water-powered mill which dates back to 1846.

One thing is for sure: this mill has been put to work. Its history stretches back 170 years, and in that time, Tyrone Mills has been a grist mill, flour mill, lumber mill, apple cider producer, historic tour center, bakery, and rural community center.

Today, it “continues to preserve its traditional roots through continual use of its water power in lumber manufacturing and flour production.”

Want to add a little thrill to your day in Clarington? The Canadian Tire Motorsport Park hosts motorsport races, but if you want to take it a step further, visitors can rent supercars on-site and drive them around the Grand Prix Circuit.

You can also drive through the region’s tucked-away hamlets – 15 to be exact.

Strolling the scenic trails in Clarington is a must as well. Orono Crown Lands, the Ganaraska Forest and the Samuel Wilmot Nature Area are just a few of the places you’ll find trails to explore and hike.

A summer road trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the beach. Clarington has multiple beaches, including the sandy shores at Darlington Provincial Park. Port Darlington West Beach Park is another popular family-friendly beach area.

End your day with a bite to eat at a local fave, The Yardbird. This restaurant is known for fresh eats and crafted cocktails, with menu items such as steak tartare, white bean and rosemary dip, open-faced venison melt on focaccia, braised short rib, and seared venison tenderloin.

Day trip to Clarington, anyone?
