Hospital for Sick Children hosts Scrubs in the City, June 5, Toronto
1/4
Some 1,500 guests gathered on the evening of June 5 for the 24th edition of Scrubs in the City, the Hospital for Sick Children’s splashy summer fundraiser. While Rio and Mykonos have been some of the geographical themes of years past, this year’s theme transported guests to Paris with Eiffel towers popping up around Evergreen Brickworks, French food on offer and even cancan dancers. By night’s end $1.5-million was raised and earmarked for upgrading equipment in the neurophysiology and neurodiagnostic labs at SickKids. These machines, SickKids Foundation president and CEO Jennifer Bernard mentioned during her remarks, are vital to help diagnose and treat complex conditions such as epilepsy, tumours and strokes in children. SickKids, long considered a leader in child health and research, sees a staggering 100,000 patients every year, so upgrades to existing equipment promotes shorter waiting times and faster diagnoses. On co-chair duties this year were Molly Fitzpatrick and Lucinda Kogan, and Holt Renfrew and Mantella Corp. were the eve’s presenting sponsors.

It’s been a decade since McGill University Health Centre’s (MUHC) Glen site opened its doors. In that time, it’s become known as one of the most innovative academic health centres in North America, comprising six sites in one, including a cancer centre, children’s hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute (Canada’s number-one killer is heart disease). On the evening of May 30 in Montreal’s Griffintown, the eighth edition of Le Bal Rouge, MUHC Foundation’s most important fundraiser, was held. North of $2-million was raised, with funds being directed to several areas including state-of-the-art equipment and prestigious research grants. Marie-Hélène Laramée, the president and CEO of the MUHC Foundation, noted in her remarks that the gala was as much about celebrating the accomplishments of the past 10 years as it was ensuring its future and “investing in the next 10 years of breakthroughs that will change and save lives across Quebec.” This year’s co-chairs were Stéphanie Vaillancourt, president, Canada, at AtkinsRéalis; Guy Cormier, president and CEO of Desjardins Group; and Anie Rouleau, founder and CEO of the Unscented Company; and there too was Dr. Lucie Opatrny, MUHC president and executive director.
