'90s Sitcom Stars Slam ‘Worst Version’ of Character in V-Day Episode

12 July 20252 Mins Read

Boy Meets World brought laughter to households in the ‘90s, but there is one episode that didn’t reach the lighthearted status quo as the rest.

Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong and Will Friedle dished on the season 6 Valentine’s Day episode, and slammed the storyline for showcasing the “worst version” of Cory, played by Ben Savage.

“It felt rushed. It felt weird,” Rider, 45, who portrayed Shawn Hunter, explained during the Thursday, July 10, episode of the “Pod Meets World” podcast. “It just felt like a couple different episodes crammed into one. It was like, one about Cory’s anxiety and Valentine’s Day, and then it, like, really obviously doesn’t become about that. And I don’t know if he actually learned anything. It just felt kind of like a couple different episodes got crammed together and they just rushed this one out.”

In the episode, Cory has his hands tied on Valentine’s Day between his two favorite women: his mom, Amy Matthews (Betsy Randle), and his fiancée, Topanga Lawrence. Cory attempted to make the official day of love special for his bride-to-be while also spearheading his mom’s baby shower. However, he ended up disappointing everybody.

During the podcast, Will, 48, known as Eric Matthews on the show, admitted that he “hated” Cory in the series episode.

“But I think you’re supposed to. But he was just the worst version of Cory you’ll ever see ever,” Will said. “It’s just terrible.”

Danielle, 44, felt the same way as her cohosts and reflected on a disturbing on-screen moment between Topanga and Cory in the episode.

“The way he grabs Topanga’s shoulder — and you can hear in my voice because I’m talking — he grabs me by the shoulder and you can hear that there’s enough force – that it changes the way the words are coming out of my mouth,” Danielle said. “Like, my breath changes. It’s just it’s not a good Cory.”
