European Travel Demand Remains Robust with Increased Interest in Off-Peak and Off-Path Travel :: Hospitality Trends

European Travel Demand Remains Robust with Increased Interest in Off-Peak and Off-Path Travel

Despite economic challenges, European travel demand remains robust, with a growing preference for quieter, off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Travel Trends and Preferences

According to the European Travel Commission’s (ETC) latest report, 77% of Europeans plan to travel between June and November 2025. This indicates a strong desire to travel despite ongoing economic pressures. The report, titled “Monitoring Sentiment for Intra-European Travel” Wave 22, highlights that many Europeans intend to maintain or even increase their holiday budgets.

Travel demand spans all age groups, with those aged 55 and over showing the highest intent at 82%. This is closely followed by individuals aged 45-54 (79%) and 35-44 (78%). While the younger demographic of 18-24-year-olds shows slightly lower intent at 66%, this is notable given the financial and time-related barriers they often face.

Preference for Quieter Destinations

A significant trend emerging from the report is the preference for less crowded and quieter destinations. More than half of the travelers (55%) are seeking off-the-beaten-path destinations for their next trip. This marks a shift from traditional tourist hotspots, with only 45% of respondents opting for these locations. Miguel Sanz, President of the ETC, emphasizes the importance for destinations to promote less crowded experiences, particularly during shoulder months, to align with travelers’ changing expectations.

Seasonal and Regional Travel Patterns

While July and August remain the most popular months for travel, September is gaining traction, with 22% of Europeans planning trips during this month. This indicates a growing openness to off-peak travel, driven by factors such as milder weather, fewer crowds, and better value for money.

Regionally, 91% of Europeans intend to travel within the continent, with only 8% considering trips beyond Europe. Higher costs and geopolitical uncertainties abroad likely influence this preference. Within Europe, domestic travel interest remains steady at 26%, while travel to neighboring countries is at 33%. There is also an increasing interest in more distant European destinations, with 32% of travelers looking beyond neighboring countries. The Mediterranean region remains a top choice, with Spain, Italy, France, and Greece leading in popularity.

Transportation and Budget Considerations

Air travel remains the most popular mode of transportation, chosen by 53% of travelers for its speed and affordability. However, the growing interest in lesser-known destinations is influencing mobility choices, with 32% of Europeans now opting for car travel. This mode is favored for its flexibility, comfort, and access to locations not well served by public transport.

Despite economic uncertainties, 62% of Europeans plan to maintain their travel budgets through November 2025, while 22% expect to increase their spending. The most common budget range is between €1,500 and €2,500 per person, marking a 3% increase from summer 2024. Spending priorities at destinations focus on accommodation (32%) and food & drinks (24%). However, preferences vary by age group, with those over 45 prioritizing comfort and quality dining, and those under 35 focusing more on experiences and lifestyle upgrades.
