One of B.C.’s prettiest towns is on this island with clear waters and hidden coves

24 July 20253 Mins Read

Canada might not be top of mind when it comes to island destinations, but B.C.’s archipelagos dazzle visitors year-round with their lush nature, unforgettable wildlife experiences, and incredible views. Mayne Island is known as one of the most beautiful places in the province, making it a must-visit this summer and beyond.

If it’s a taste of the island life you’re craving, that’s exactly what you’ll find here!

Clear waters and panoramic views

A former stopping point during the 1850s Fraser Gold Rush, the island is a popular spot for hiking and kayaking. It’s also a great place to plan a visit to enjoy specific recurring events such as the Saturday Farmers’ Market at the Agricultural Hall Grounds and the annual Fall Fair, which has been a beloved tradition since 1928.

Outdoor lovers frequent Mount Parke Regional Park for its moderate trails and panoramic views of the Gulf Islands, the Strait of Georgia, and the distant peaks of Vancouver Island.

The island’s “clear waters and complex shoreline” beckon you in for a range of water sports and exploration, with a ton of hidden coves and small islets to uncover on your journey.

Wildlife viewing

While the area is on the small side at a total of 21 square kilometres, the charming spot offers plenty for nature lovers to explore, from frequent Orca sightings to rocky beaches and bluffs at St. John Point Regional Park, which doubles as a great bird-watching spot.

According to the island’s website, its vibrant local arts scene also attracts visitors from far and wide. Art studios line the natural landscape with unique, locally made products to peruse and cultural events like the Reading Festival and Studio Tour to showcase their talents.

Pleasant weather year-round

In terms of weather, the island is known for its mild winters and pleasant summers, which average around 20°C during the warmer months.

Ready to plan a trip? Visitors can embark on a scenic ferry ride from Vancouver or Victoria, taking in views of the surrounding forests and untamed shorelines.

How to get there: Take a ferry from Tsawwassen to Mayne Island Village Bay.
