How an elite marathon runner packs when he travels | Canada Voices

For B.C.-born runner Cameron Levins to support his routine while on the road, he has to haul exercise equipment, massage gear, a supply of running shoes and more.Cameron Levins/Supplied

Cameron Levins doesn’t pack light. When Canada’s fastest marathoner boards a plane, it’s with enough gear for three daily runs; because that’s exactly what his training demands. Holding North America’s marathon record at 2:05:36, Levins travels with more shoes, fuel and sweaty laundry than most runners see in a week.

Supporting that routine on the road means hauling exercise equipment, massage gear, a supply of running shoes and a deep trove of snacks and clothes. And just to be sure, he always packs more underwear than he needs. “You hear of these people wearing them once on each side,” he said, “but I’m not about to do that.”

Born in Black Creek, B.C., and now based in Portland, Ore., Levins admits to sometimes needing to check a bag at the gate to manage his luggage. To cut down on travel to high-altitude training camps – a staple for elite distance runners – he brought the mountains to him. His third run of the day typically takes place at home on a treadmill sealed inside a hypoxic chamber, mimicking the low-oxygen conditions of high elevations.

Yet, when you are a world-class athlete, there is no getting around globe-trotting for races. Over the course of his career so far, Levins, 36, represented Canada at Olympic Games in London, Tokyo and Paris, and world championships in Moscow, Beijing and Eugene, Ore. These days, he has made packing a science: His running gear (usually from his sponsor, ASICS) goes in one checked oversized duffle, clothes go in a carry-on and essentials such as his passport and racing shoes go in a backpack.

After years on the circuit, Levins lives by a simple rule: In racing, it’s better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

Running shoe supply: ASICS Novablast

“My shoes take up a lot of space because I bring at least three pairs, and sometimes more. I bring the ASICS Novablasts for easy runs and sometimes the ASICS Gel-Cumulus. I do workouts in the ASICS Superblasts and am currently racing in the ASICS Metaspeed Ray. Sometimes I’ll even travel with two pairs of racing shoes, in case one pair isn’t feeling good for some reason.”

Buying options

$150, buy at Asics

Recovery tool: Normatec 3 Legs

“This is the single piece of gear that takes the most space. They’re oversized recovery pants that compress and massage the legs. … I bought them a few years ago to treat myself after racing well and making a nice payday. Now, I rarely leave home without them.”

Buying options

$1,149, buy at Normatec

Physiotherapy gear: Therabody Theragun Prime

“I travel with a massage therapy gun called Theragun, and also resistance bands for body maintenance and strength work between runs. Prehab and rehab are important when you’re running this much.”

Buying options

$399, buy on Amazon

Liquid relief: Country Time lemonade

“It’s my fuel: what goes in my water bottle on the race course. These days, runners have more specialized fuelling strategies, and I’m considering moving to something more official or advanced, but lemonade has always worked for me. Last year, getting too close to the Olympics, I didn’t want to try anything different.”
Levins packs the black cherry flavour, which is not available in Canada.

Buying options

$18.49 for 2.4 kg container, buy on Amazon

Healthy craving: Clif Bar

”I pack tons and tons of Clif Bars. I’ll put 30 in my bag, and I’ll think I’ve overpacked, and then I always get through them. It’s a safe food to eat around races because I am used to them. Otherwise, I’ll have a bagel with peanut butter and banana before the race, but that’s usually easy to find no matter where you are in the world.”

Buying options

$2.99 a bar, buy at Well
