Beloved Boxer, 69, Makes a Rare Appearance at 'The Pickup' World Premiere

28 July 20252 Mins Read

The red carpet for the world premiere of the highly anticipated action-comedy The Pickup was already bursting with A-list talent Sunday night, but the event received an unexpected dose of legendary star power from the world of sports. Boxing icon Sugar Ray Leonardmade a surprise appearance, adding some heavyweight prestige to the star-studded affair at Regal LA Live in Los Angeles.

Leonard, 69, proved that his charisma remains undefeated. The former undisputed world champion looked sharp and stylish as he walked the carpet, flashing the same million-dollar smile that lit up arenas around the globe. While the film’s stars, including Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, and Keke Palmer, were the main event, Leonard’s presence created a major buzz.

Leonard’s journey to superstardom exploded onto the world stage at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, where his speed and effervescent personality captured a gold medal and the hearts of millions. Turning professional, he brought a level of celebrity to the sport. His charisma made him a star outside the ring, while his skill made him a champion inside it.

His professional career is defined by the legendary rivalries that captivated the world. As one of the “Four Kings,” Leonard engaged in epic, historic battles against the other titans of his era: Roberto Durán, Thomas “Hitman” Hearns, and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Leonard became the first boxer to earn over $100 million in purses and won world titles in five different weight classes, from welterweight to light heavyweight. This rare accomplishment demonstrated his ability to translate his power and skill up the scales, adapting and conquering new challenges throughout his storied career.
