Elden Ring Nightreign’s new Everdark boss is a Demon’s Souls throwback

31 July 20252 Mins Read

The latest amped-up “Everdark” boss variation to join Elden Ring Nightreign is here, giving players a fresh twist on the contentious encounter with Maris, Fathom of Knight. You know, the flying jellyfish that’s always frustratingly out of range.

Well the bad news is that the battle against Maris, otherwise known as the Nightlord Augur, is now even longer in its Everdark form, and even more out of range. Everdark Sovereign Maris has a new phase in which it becomes bigger, flies higher, and deals immense damage with a punishing beam attack that leaves huge explosions in its wake.

But developer FromSoftware has a very cool answer to the Everdark Sovereign Maris’ new abilities, and it’s a callback to the original Demon’s Souls.

When Everdark Sovereign Maris is seemingly killed, it returns to full health for a new phase: Maris goes full cosmic jellyfish and soars high above the battlefield. But players are also gifted a new weapon: a +3 version of their signature weapon complete with a unique weapon skill, Storm Ruler.

Using the Storm Ruler weapon skill temporarily transforms your weapon into a Moonlight Greatsword, as seen in the original Elden Ring. Storm Ruler fires arcs of magic toward its target, and it has range enough to reach Everdark Maris as it flies far away.

Fully charging up Storm Ruler unleashes an even bigger wave of energy in the form of a vertical slash that’s reminiscent of the Storm Ruler large sword from Demon’s Souls. Storm Ruler in that game was, like Storm Ruler in Nightreign, found in a boss battle against Storm King, another flying sea creature — it looks like a manta ray — that was best dispatched by unleashing a wave of power from the signature sword. Storm Ruler in Demon’s Souls was the fastest, most dramatic way to take down Storm King, but was pretty much useless outside of that boss fight.

Storm Ruler is back, in a fashion, as part of Elden Ring Nightreign, which is full of FromSoft’s greatest hits appearances from Elden Ring and various Dark Souls bosses. Now, an homage to Demon’s Souls is here, along with some love for the iconic Moonlight Greatsword.

Sure, fighting Maris, Fathom of Knight kind of sucks in Nightreign, but now you’ve got a cool new sword to lend it some spectacle.
