Apex Legends players have been begging for a film or animated series since the game first launched in 2019, and according to a recent interview with EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, EA is still on board.
Miele referenced the game’s extensive lore as one of the reasons EA thinks an Apex Legends film or television adaptation would do well, telling Variety that “[Players] don’t have all the backstory, the history, and there’s just rich worlds and rich history with these characters and these Legends that can come to life through linear media and partnerships.”
“We’re pretty motivated to do that, and doing it in a way that really respects and upholds the brand and the franchise,” Miele said.
Apex Legends takes place in the same universe as Titanfall and Titanfall 2, and features characters like Ash and Kuben Blisk, both of whom first appeared in the Titanfall franchise. Each season, Respawn releases animated trailers that show off upcoming gameplay changes and give players a glimpse into the lives of each Legend. In the past, Respawn regularly released episodes of an animated webseries called Stories from the Outlands (with each episode focused on a different Legend’s backstory), but the studio hasn’t released a new episode since Season 19 launched in 2023.
2023 also saw the debut of Kill Code, a four-episode YouTube miniseries focused on Revenant and Loba. But aside from seasonal gameplay trailers, Respawn hasn’t released any animated lore drops since the final episode of Kill Code was released in November 2023. The studio hinted that another animated miniseries was on the way in 2024, but so far, nothing has materialized, and former lead animator Moy Parra left Respawn earlier this year. Still, players frequently voice their desire for a long-form animated Apex Legends project in the comments sections of the game’s seasonal launch trailers.
EA has yet to announce anything official in regard to an Apex Legends film or television show, but whether the studio chooses to move forward will likely depend heavily on the performance of the upcoming film adaptation of The Sims, which is currently in the early stages of production. EA has partnered with Amazon MGM Studios and Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment to produce the film.
