We’re Hiring!
Red Deer Players Society is looking to hiring 2-3 passionate creators with diverse skillsets to be part of our Artist-In-Residence team for our next season. These creators will spearhead various aspects of our programming season, such as producing plays, running workshops, fostering new works, and more.

Job Overview:
The Artist in Residence will lead or contribute to one or more projects across our season which may include designing, producing, directing, staging a new work, delivering workshops or mentorships for the broader community. Artists will be invited to board meetings as a non-voting member, participate in company discussion and season planning, and engage with artists, partners, and volunteers.

This role may involve executing a show that you have proposed, for which the organization will manage logistics. This may include managing a project budget and timeline while leading creatively in collaboration with the production team.

The Artist in Residence works closely with the Executive Director to align the theatre’s artistic goals with its operational and financial needs, while engaging the community and promoting local participation in the arts.

Compensation Structure:
Honorariums are determined in collaboration with artists, based on scale, duration, and nature of project. Typical range falls between $1000 – $2000 based on scope of responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement program offerings to support the theatre’s artistic vision.
  • Propose and oversee one project and one community learning opportunity in collaboration with the Executive Director.
  • Nurture relationships with local artists, actors, directors, and key community members to promote the development of new talent.
  • Work with the Executive Director to ensure programming aligns with the theatre’s budget and operational capabilities.
  • Represent the theatre in the community, potentially connecting with local schools, arts organizations, and other community groups.
  • Help the ED with delivering special events, talkbacks, or outreach programs to deepen the community’s involvement with the theatre.


Qualifications:

  • Experience in directing, producing, or working in theatre arts, working in community theatre is a plus.
  • Leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to inspire and mentor fellow creatives.
  • Knowledge of theatre production, including directing, casting, stagecraft, and technical elements.
  • Education in Theatre Arts or related field is encouraged but not required.
  • A commitment to community engagement and fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for artistic expression.

Keep in mind that RDPS will provide rehearsal and performance venues, a modest project budget, and can assist you in finding some missing pieces as long as you identify them: i.e., a set designer, artistic mentor, participants for a workshop, etc.
    • What is one project you would like to produce with Red Deer Player's this next season? (A play, a writing project, a discipline) Include all as many details and practical solutions as possible. (Co-collaborators, time of year, etc)
    • What is one workshop you could offer the Red Deer Theatre community? Please include a few examples of specific techniques, activities, etc
  • Artist Resume and Bio

Submissions Deadline is August 14th. Successful Candidates will be contacted by August 21st.
