This stunning southern Alberta waterfall is a hidden gem

12 August 20253 Mins Read

When you think of moving water near Calgary, the scenic Elbow Falls near Bragg Creek, Alta., often gets all the attention.

But there’s another waterfall in Sheep River Provincial Park that’s just as awe-inspiring, and maybe even a little less busy.

Sheep River Falls is a one-hour and 20-minute drive southwest of Calgary. Nestled amongst the mountains in remarkable Kananaskis Country, there’s an accessible trail path and a bridge that allow you to cross over the falls.

For the daring, you can also brave your way underneath the bridge and venture closer to the rocks. Just remember to watch your step as the rapids could easily pull you under if you make the wrong move.

Summers are a great time to visit the trail, as the weather is clear and there’s little obstruction on the rocks surrounding the rushing water.

The turnoff to Sheep River Falls is in the heart of Bluerock Wildland Provincial Park, home of nearby Mt. Hoffman, Bluerock and Cougar Mountain, which you can summit if you’re feeling adventurous. Mt. Hoffman is an ideal place to spot wildflowers, which grow in the fields and meadows on this moderate mountain hike.

There’s also the nearby Dyson Falls, situated along the path heading east towards Green Mountain, which is worth the trip in its own right.

The trail around Sheep River Falls is short and relatively flat, making it the perfect introductory hike for those new to mountaineering.

Don’t forget you’ll need a Kananaskis Conservation Pass to park in the lot off of Township Road 195A. But it’s an easy walk once you’ve parked your vehicle, with open access to the falls and rewarding natural views.

We recommend packing a picnic and making this a full-fledged day trip, where you can spend your afternoon cooling off in the mist of Sheep River’s falling water.

August is a great time to visit Kananaskis Country — just don’t forget to brush up on your bear safety and come well-prepared!

Where: Sheep River Road, Kananaskis
How to get there:
Drive approximately one hour and 20 minutes south of Calgary via Highway 22

Note: When planning your trips, please be mindful of the dangers of waterfalls and the hikes to get to them. Always let someone know if you’re planning a day hike or overnight stay outdoors. Familiarize yourself with this safety list prior to departure.
