What a luxury hotel manager packs when he travels | Canada Voices

22 August 20254 Mins Read

For many years, Anthony Campaniaris had a reputation among his friends and family: A frequent business traveller, he was notorious for being stuck at the airport because of delayed or cancelled flights, whether it was a string of bad luck or simply inevitable owing to his busy travel schedule. He flies twice a quarter, at least, which Campaniaris says has helped him master the art of efficient packing.

September marks two years since Campaniaris took the helm at Toronto’s 1 Hotel as general manager. His long career as a hotel executive includes roles at top hospitality brands such as Hilton, The Hazelton Hotel, Shangri-La, The Anndore House and Nobu Hotel, both in Warsaw and his hometown of Toronto.

All of this has meant a lot of global travel for corporate conferences.

A tailored blazer, dark denim jeans and a pair of Chelsea boots are Campaniaris’s go-to uniform for those business-casual conferences, which means he doesn’t have to think too much about what to pack. The added benefit of these pieces is that they transition well to dinners with colleagues, he says.

Campaniaris has learned to limit himself to a carry-on for business trips. He admits that when he travels for pleasure he packs “everything except the kitchen sink,” so on his most recent trip to Nashville for a 1 Hotel corporate meeting, he had to resist the urge to take his cowboy hat and boots. “When I’m travelling for work, I think about functionality,” he says.

As for getting stuck at the airport, he now tries to arrive as close to his departure time as possible, monitoring his phone for updates on delays.

“I’m very fortunate that the roles in my life have had me sitting in airports. But I want to spend as little time in the airport as possible. Nobody wants to wait around at a gate,” he says.

Packing gear: Rimowa Classic Cabin Aluminum Carry-on Suitcase

“I’ve been a Rimowa man for many, many years. These suitcases are durable and made to last. I recently bought a new one, but I had my previous one for over a decade. They come with a lifetime guarantee, and you can easily get them repaired since they have stores across the world, which has helped me reduce waste.”

Buying options

$2,075, buy at Rimowa

Blazer for any occasion: Suitsupply Black Tailored Fit Havana Suit Jacket

“This jacket is great because it works for any setting. When I’m travelling, I make sure that my products are wrinkle-resistant. I like this one from Suitsupply because they tailor it for you. I pair it with a crisp white organic cotton shirt that could be easily steamed.”

Buying options

$749, buy at Suitsupply

Day-to-night denim: Zegna Dark Blue Rinse-Washed Stretch Cotton Roccia Jeans

“When I’m travelling, I always pack dark denim. These jeans are extremely comfortable. From the office, to the car, to an airplane, to a dinner, they’re flexible throughout the entire journey, and you can dress them up or down.”

Buying options

$990, buy at Zegna

On-the-go spa treatment: Omnilux Men red light therapy mask

“I’m so glad that this became a thing. The benefits are incredible: It reduces lines, wrinkles and redness, and calms inflammation and irritation after shaving. Travel takes it out of you. Throwing this on for 10 minutes before leaving my hotel room gives me a little reset.”

Buying options

$535, buy at Omnilux

Wellness boost: AG1 Travel Packs

“When I’m travelling, my diet isn’t top of mind, since I’m dining out for every meal. These packs are a great way to make sure I’m staying responsible for my health and wellness.”

Buying options

$150.56 for 30 servings, buy at AG1

Sleep aid: Magnesium supplement

“I travel with any generic magnesium supplement. It helps with recovery and sleeping better, which is always lacking when you’re not in your own bed.”

Buying options

$15, buy on Amazon

Stylish carryall: Monos Metro Backpack

“I love these bags. They’re designed in Canada. I like the compartments, because I can easily keep things separate and neat. I throw my red-light mask in there, along with my passport, laptop, pen and anything else I need, and I know exactly where everything will be.”

Buying options

$245, buy at Monos
