There’s an abandoned school in the Alberta prairies that might be haunted

25 August 20252 Mins Read

The province of Alberta is full of plenty of rural abandoned spaces and places. But this one might take the win for most creepy.

Located near Pincher Creek, Alta, Utopia School was built at the turn of the 20th century. Early settlers attended the pioneer schoolhouse from 1904 to 1950. They were so optimistic about the area’s farming and agricultural abundance that they named it “Utopia School.”

Utopia School still stands, but over a hundred years of wind, rain and an endless-beating prairie sun have weathered it considerably. Still, you can see the school if you can find this little house on the prairies, hidden somewhere in southern Alberta.

What to expect

Not much is known about the history of Utopia School, which was built at the turn of the 20th century near Pincher Creek, Alta.

There’s nowhere to park your vehicle around the rumoured Utopia School, but you won’t have to, as it appears along a deserted rural farm road.

The decaying schoolhouse is the only standing structure around it, making it a true gem of the grassland.

Its photographic potential is so great that a picture of it was recently crowned the Canadian Photo of the Year in Canadian Geographic.

Between 1904 and 1950, Utopia School drew farm children of early settlers from the surrounding area to experience its tutelage.

It’s been over a century since the schoolhouse was built, and despite the roof caving in from a battering of extreme weather, it still stands.

You’ll have to find out for yourself the exact location of Utopia School in southern Alberta. Locals in Pincher Creek, Alta., might be willing to point you in the right direction.

If you find it, you’ll be rewarded with one of the creepiest and perhaps haunted schoolhouses in all the land.

Where: Location unknown
How to get there: Drive two hours south of Calgary via Highway 2
