These are the best places to microadventure in and around Calgary

29 August 20253 Mins Read

If you’ve never heard the term “microadventure” before, you’re not the only one.

In fact, the term is still relatively new, making it the internet’s favourite trending outdoor and lifestyle activity.

Griff Washburn of the indie project Goth Babe recently credited microadventures for saving his creativity and drive in a video posted to his YouTube channel.

There’s something to be said for the importance of discomfort in boosting creativity in our otherwise hyper-convenient lives.

Plus, microadventures are the cheaper, more accessible alternative to vacations or luxury getaways, making them a more attainable option for the weekend or after your office 9 to 5.

Are you looking for your own microadventure in and around Calgary? You’ve come to the right place. Read on for more suggestions on how to unplug and unwind outside of the city.

What is a microadventure?

The term microadventure was coined by English adventurer, motivational speaker, and author Alastair Humphreys, who was named National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for his work, “Year of Microadventure” in 2011.

In that short time, the term has trended all over social media, where #microadventure is now used as a popular hashtag on Instagram and TikTok.

Microadventures are designed to be short, local, and accessible adventures that anyone can partake in without having to disrupt their busy lives or break the bank.

Luckily, we live in Alberta, where there is an abundance of adventure opportunities. From our proximity to the Rocky Mountains to the province’s nearby natural lakes and waterways, there are plenty of day trips to be had in and around Calgary.

Adventure near Calgary

Calgary is an ideal place to take part in microadventures, with plenty of rural day trips available in and around the city that will give you a taste of the quieter side of life.

You can also hit the road to eyeball some of the province’s wackiest and weirdest rural attractions. Gopher museums and haunted places are scattered all across the province and are just waiting to be discovered.

If you want to really emphasize the “adventure” part of this trend, you can head out for a hike on one of our nearby mountains, paddle on the lakes and streams of Banff and Kananaskis, or go for a river surf on one of Calgary’s nearby watersheds.

In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can take you to beautiful frozen waterfalls. Or you can strap on the skates for a winter spin at Lake Louise, one of Canada’s natural frozen lakes.

The best part of a microadventure is that it is what you make it. Planning around your office job, commute, or even your pet’s walking and feeding preferences is all part of the charm.

With the Rocky Mountains within a two-hour drive of the city, we’re truly spoiled with natural abundance here in Calgary.

So make a list, check it twice, and get ready to hit the slopes. We want to know where your next microadventure will take you!
