Port Coquitlam is honouring hometown hero Terry Fox with a giant art installation on Saturday, Sept. 13 — commemorating the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.
Dubbed the Gateway of Giants, this installation will stand in the plaza in front of 2150 Wilson Ave., and will be made up of two distinct sculptures that “capture the spirit of Terry Fox growing up in Port Coquitlam,” according to a press release.
The community event will include speeches and activities, with members of city council and of the Fox family in attendance.
Honouring Terry Fox’s legacy
After a rigorous international selection process, the City of Port Coquitlam, along with the Fox family, selected renowned Spanish artist Casto Solano to craft the sculptures.
Not only will these statues reflect Terry Fox’s experience growing up in Port Coquitlam, but the Gateway of Giants will serve as the entry point into the new Terry Fox: Inspiring Local Champions exhibit inside the community centre.
Since it opened on April 12, this community exhibit features interactive displays and artifacts provided by the Fox family and the Terry Fox Centre — which include items like Terry Fox’s spare prosthetic leg, an adidas running shoe, and a Marathon of Hope t-shirt.
To further celebrate Terry’s legacy, City Hall will display photographs from Terry’s Marathon of Hope and allow residents and visitors to respectfully visit his gravesite at the Port Coquitlam Cemetery.
Celebrate 45 years of Canadian history
“The Gateway of Giants sculptures are a powerful tribute to Terry Fox’s enduring spirit and deep roots in our community,” says Mayor Brad West in a press release. “Seeing his story reflected in these sculptures — especially the depiction of him as a young teen — brings it even closer to home.”
The unveiling of the Gateway of Giants will boast an array of engaging activities in the Terry Fox Hometown Square and showcase the Terry Fox movie.
