Dragon Quest 1&2 HD remakes get new gameplay details from Square Enix

4 September 20252 Mins Read

After last year’s Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was a success, the first two games in the storied RPG franchise are next in Square Enix’s HD-2D pipeline. The remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and Dragon Quest 2 are due out in October, and on Thursday the publisher revealed more information regarding their combat systems.

True to form, Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake will retain the turn-based combat of the original games, but with a few new wrinkles. A new item, the scroll, is being added, and it’ll allow your playable characters to learn new spells and skills. Scrolls will have to be found while adventuring — such as in treasure chests — and each scroll will have an ability to be learned by a specific character. For example, Hero in Dragon Quest 1 can learn Dragon Slash to deal high damage to dragon enemies.

Princess of Cannock, sister to party member Prince of Cannock, joins the party as a playable character in the HD-2D version of Dragon Quest 2 after previously only being an NPC. She’s good with Frizz-type and Crack-type spells during battle.

Dragon Quest 2‘s sigils return in the remake and are being added to the first game. They grant advantages during combat, like how the Sun Sigil can make some special abilities land critical damage.

Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD Remake will be released on Oct. 30 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. A digital-only Dragon Quest HD-2D Erdrick Trilogy Collection will retail for $99.99 and collect all three remade Dragon Quest games. Hopefully they’ll tide over fans of the series as they await news of Dragon Quest 12, originally revealed in 2021 with little word since.
