Rising Awareness of EU Entry/Exit System Among UK Travellers as New Border Rules Loom

  • Over half of UK travellers are now aware of the upcoming EU Entry/Exit System (EES), with awareness rising to 61% among frequent international travellers.
  • The phased rollout of the EES will begin on October 12, 2025, and is expected to be fully operational by April 10, 2026, potentially leading to varied border experiences for travellers.

As the EU prepares to implement the new Entry/Exit System (EES), a recent survey by ABTA – The Travel Association reveals that awareness among UK travellers is growing. The EES, an electronic border process, is set to change how travellers experience European borders, with 51% of people now aware of the new requirements, up from 44% in 2024. This awareness is even higher among frequent international travellers, reaching 61%.

The EES rollout is scheduled to begin on October 12, 2025, and will be introduced in phases over a six-month period, aiming for full operation by April 10, 2026. This staggered approach enables countries that are ready to implement the system to do so earlier, while others can adjust as needed. The phased introduction is designed to minimize disruption during peak travel periods, such as the October half-term and Christmas holidays.

Mark Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA, expressed support for the phased rollout, acknowledging the challenges of launching a digital border system across 29 countries. He emphasized the importance of travellers understanding the upcoming changes, although no pre-arrival actions are required for EES. ABTA is actively providing guidance and advice to ensure a smooth transition for travellers.

For more information on the EES and related travel advice, UK travellers can visit the ABTA’s website at www.abta.com/eesandetias.
