There’s a nearly 100-foot lookout tower in Ontario near colourful granite rocks

11 September 20252 Mins Read

Fall is nearly here, and it’s time to start planning a road trip that will bring all the colourful views. Right on the boundary between the Algonquin Highlands Township and the Lake of Bays Municipality in Muskoka is the picturesque hamlet of Dorset, Ont. The area may be small, but there is plenty to see and do, especially on a day away from the city.

Dorset is well-known for its main attraction — the Dorset Scenic Lookout Tower. This 100-foot tower has an observation deck where visitors can take in the treetop views, which dance with fall colours come September.

From the top, you can also see the beautiful Lake of Bays. September is known as the peak autumn season, and according to Algonquin Highlands, it is not unusual for more than 600 vehicles to visit the tower in a single day!

Fees to visit the tower start at $2.19 for walk-ups and $10.95 for vehicles, with additional pricing for vehicles available on its website.

Nearby the tower is Tower Hill Marine. This area brings you to pristine waters and colourful granite rocks where you can snap photos, lounge or walk along.

Ontario residents aren’t the only ones who appreciate the beauty of the area.

According to Dorset’s website, “Dorset sits in a valley with an abundance of natural beauty, which draws visitors from around the globe.”

End your day in Dorset with a hike through the changing colours of fall. There is a marked trail up and down Tower Hill, a total hike of around 1.5 km.

“Most visitors find it easier to walk up the steep trail and down the less steep trail, but you are welcome to use either. The trail begins and ends at the Dorset Heritage Museum,” says Dorset’s site.

The hike is among a series of systems included in the Haliburton Highlands Trails and Tours Network, popular in autumn, so be prepared to see some other visitors.
