Cult Comedy Sequel Finally Starts Filming as Beloved Star, 72, Returns

14 September 20252 Mins Read

Rick Moranis has officially landed in Sydney, Australia, as he prepares to start filming the highly anticipated Spaceballs 2.

Video footage from Entertainment Tonight shared on September 11, showed the beloved ‘80s star wearing jeans and a dark sweater that he paired with a tan baseball cap. Moranis’ return to acting came after the comedian stepped away from the spotlight in the late ‘90s. His last live-action role was in 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.

Moranis, 72, shifted his focus to raising his kids after his wife, Ann Belsky Moranis, died from cancer in 1991. While he did the occasional voiceover role, like in Disney’s 2003 animated movie Brother Bear, he avoided live-action appearances.

In the comments section of the clip on YouTube, several people were incredibly excited about the Ghostbusters star’s return to the big screen.

“This is going to be a huge hit! Welcome back Rick Moranis,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Love Rick Moranis!!! He’s an incredible comedian. What a long wait to return to the silver screen.”

A third person chimed in and said, “I’ve always said that if there was anyone who could get Rick Moranis out of retirement, it would be Mel Brooks.”

Spaceballs 2 was officially confirmed in June when Josh Gad announced the project. Brooks, 99, is back as producer, a full 38 years after he directed the original Spaceballs, ensuring the sequel carries his trademark humor. In the months that followed, both Bill Pullman and Daphne Zuniga, stars of the original, were confirmed by Deadline to return. Pullman’s son, Lewis Pullman, was also announced as part of the cast, along with Keke Palmer. However, Gad, 44, kept teasing that the “biggest surprise” would be Moranis’ return as Dark Helmet.

“Well, I am not going to comment on whether or not Rick Moranis is returning, but hypothetically, if he were to return, I would say it’s because Rick would have felt like this was a project worthy of his return,” Gad told ScreenRant in an interview published on September 9.

Spaceballs 2 is expected to release at some point in 2027.
