Roblox, the online gaming platform and game creation system, has been in the news recently—though not for reasons for which any company hopes. (You can read more about the Roblox controversy on our blog post, “A Comprehensive Summary of the Roblox Controversy.”)
Roblox boasts more than 111 million daily users, with many of those players under the age of 13. It allows users to create custom games that are hosted on its site. However, as you might imagine, not all of the user-created content is safe for that young player base.
Unfortunately, as Roblox has grown in popularity, so have reports of problematic content, child sexual abuse material and online predation. And many people feel that the company’s efforts to moderate those issues have been sorely lacking, to say the least.
So, we gathered the Plugged In crew to talk about the controversies surrounding Roblox and answer the question that parents are likely asking themselves: “Is my child safe on Roblox?”
