In big cities, we’re used to being relentlessly advertised at. Huge screens blaring bold claims and flashing lights are pretty much a staple of our streets – in some spots, adverts even constitute landmarks (Times Square, we’re looking you).
But this Sunday, billboards across the planet could look a little different, thanks to an enormous global campaign that aims to champion peace and harmony. It’s called Essays for Peace, a campaign returning for its second edition to mark the International Day of Peace on September 21. With 250 cities taking part this year, it’s set to be quite a magnificent display.
So, what can we expect? Well, across more than 15,000 screens in 250 cities all over the world, an ‘ad blackout’ will take place, with blaring advertisements being replaced with an image of a single burning candle – projected to mark what will be the world’s largest-ever peace meditation.
Screens big and small will be participating (for five minutes, either at noon or midnight), but what organisers describe as the ‘epicenter of the initiative’ will be at London’s Piccadilly Circus. The candle will be broadcast here for 10 minutes from 12pm local time.
Want to get involved? You can – the goal is for the image to take over as many screens as possible, big or small, public or private. People can join in on their devices, be it a phone, laptop, tablet or TV, or even just changing your Insta profile picture for the duration of the meditation. Head to the Essays for Peace website to download a candle, and keep an eye on any billboards near you.
