Netflix’s new period drama, House of Guinness, is a Succession-like saga of adult kids who inherit wealth and power when their father dies… only to discover that it’s not all its cracked up to be. The opposite, in fact.
Created by Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight and starring James Norton (King & Conqueror), Louis Partridge (Enola Holmes), Anthony Boyle (Masters of the Air) and Emily Fairn (Saturday Night), the eight-parter is as bingeable as a pint of the black stuff and, like, the stout itself, rewards patience with a intriguing bundle of plot threads that tie in the rise of Irish Republicanism, 18th century political manoeuvrings, the rapid expansion of Dublin, and the vibrant, violent melting pot of post-Civil War New York.
The anachronistic soundtrack is a selling point, too, with Fontaines D.C. and Kneecap lending raucous energy, The Mary Wallopers and The Chieftains providing Irish folk anthems, Celtic punks The Feelgood McLouds turning over a table or two.
