Quebec’s October weather forecast warns of an extra chilly month (and when snow could hit)

26 September 20253 Mins Read

Southern Quebec is about to trade one of its sunniest Septembers for chillier, rainier October weather.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Montreal region will run about one degree colder than usual, with temperatures averaging 7°C over the following month. Precipitation is expected to land around 80 mm, slightly below normal, but still enough to make umbrellas a staple.

If this feels like a sharp turn, it’s because September was unusually bright in Montreal. A new MétéoMédia report revealed that the city saw just five rainy days all month — three of them in the same week — and enjoyed an exceptional stretch of sunshine. Between mid and late September, Montreal averaged nearly 10 hours of sun per day, close to the maximum possible for this time of year.

That streak collapsed in the final week, when daily sunshine dropped to less than two hours on average. But the skies are set to clear again as the month ends, giving way to a sunnier start to October.

What October looks like week by week

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, here’s how October should play out.

  • October 1–10: scattered showers early on before sunnier skies, but the air will stay chilly.
  • October 11–13: a brief warm spell, though paired with rain.
  • October 14–21: some sun at first, then a damp and chilly stretch.
  • October 22–31: mostly sunny to close the month, with a few cool showers mixed in.

Overall, expect a back-and-forth pattern: a touch of warmth here and there, but mostly cool, jacket-worthy days.

What about snow?

While southern Quebec escapes the snow for now, other provinces aren’t as lucky. The Almanac suggests parts of Ontario could see their first flakes in October. So while Montrealers grumble about rain and cold, at least the shovels can stay in storage a little longer.

Looking further ahead

The Almanac’s long-range outlook has Quebec facing a warmer-than-normal winter with more precipitation overall, but less snow than usual. The snowiest stretches are expected between late November and early January, before things turn wetter in spring and hotter in summer.

For now, though, October is shaping up to be a classic fall month in southern Quebec: chilly mornings, rainy spells, and just enough sunshine to sneak in a few colourful strolls before winter creeps in.

And if predictions hold true, we shouldn’t see any of the white stuff until after Halloween.
